Hello Ladies! I am Nancy Shura-Dervin aka "Ultra Mama".
​I am founder and owner of
​Ultra Ladies and Trail Run Events. 
I started running for the very first time at the age of 40 and I have finished more than 100 Marathon and Ultra races where I have several age division podium finishes. In 2003 I was the first person documented to qualify for and finish two of the most prestigious foot races in the world, in the same year, the Boston Marathon and the Badwater-135 Ultra Marathon, known as the "World's Toughest Foot Race".

​I am a UESCA Certified Ultra Running Coach, RRCA Certified Running Coach, UESCA Certified Endurance Nutrition Coach, UESCA Certified Strength & Conditioning Coach and I hold an active CA Nursing License. My previous career as a groundbreaking Educator, Coach and Motivational Speaker in the field of Natural Childbirth has beautifully transitioned into my passion to help Female Runners learn the physical, mental and emotional tools to complete challenging races. I have been coaching Runners for over 30-years and my Los Angeles Running Community lovingly refers to me as "Ultra Mama"!

FEMALE ONLY COACHING
For many years, ultra running was a mostly male-dominated sport! In 1990, the granddaddy of all ultras, Western States 100 had 209 finishers with only 33 being female. Small 50K races typically had 60-80 runners with only 10 or 15 women among them. The obvious challenge for female ultra runners was… being female; challenging in that there was a scarcity of female ultra runners to network and mentor with.  As the field of female ultra marathoners grows, there is increased need for a comfortable place for women who desire coaching. 

There has also always been a 
scarcity of female coaches in sports. We have been conditioned to believe that male coaches are superior to female coaches however with qualifications being equal, women coaches make better coaches for female athletes because... We are experts in being female! 


Men and women are different physiologically and emotionally! Because of our differences, "Generic Coaching" is outdated and just as a majority of females now choose female physicians they are beginning to prefer female coaches! Female coaches are important because we are a same-sex role model and only we can address the very personal needs of our female athletes.

Whether you are a “Newbie” needing support  for your very first trail race or you are an experienced ultra runner chasing that next PR, Ultra Ladies Coaching is here for you because the fact remains, we aren’t men... we don’t look or think like men and we certainly don’t run like men!  As women, our needs and approaches are different and Ultra Ladies Coaching will open you up to a world of information, inspiration and power that can only ​be shared by other women who are​...

NANCY'S COACHING STYLE
Coaching is a partnership between Coach and Athlete. A good coach will instill confidence and independence in the athlete who will gradually learn to become “self coached” through the process of being coached. Training should be configured into the runner’s life to not compete against professional or personal time. Goal setting is a huge component of coaching, and monitoring runners to measure their progress is my job. This begins with assessing the runner and creating a training plan that compliments the runner’s abilities and goals. Nancy's coaching also includes incorporates Nutrition and Strength Training to maintain a healthy body while ultra training.

I believe in keeping your training manageable, keeping it balanced and keeping it fun! I use Mindfulness techniques that focus on empowering individuals' actualization of potential and embodied transformation through guided imagery and visualization techniques combined with a personalized plan to help you meet your running goals. My UESCA Certification in Endurance Nutrition will help you build the strongest body for running and recovery. I believe in creating a balance between running and life. While you will have a training plan to follow, the plan is a living document that can change according to your needs as an athlete, to build the strongest, most confident version of yourself while maintaining balance with the important parts of your life that also matter (partner, family, work and more).
